Please check out pratyatosa.com/hkl/. It’s
a demo of one way to set up an easy to maintain Hare Kṛṣṇa news
site. It has the following advantages:
1. A good way to describe the nature of this website’s home page is “simple elegance.” It’s a “PHP” file named “index.php3.” It never has to be updated manually. It contains an ingenious PHP script that my oldest son, Murāri Dāsa, wrote for me. The PHP script causes the link list to be automatically generated by the server each time that the home page is loaded.
2. The most recently updated web page is always automatically on the top of the home page’s link list.
3. The dates at the end of each of the home page’s link list titles refer to “date updated,” and are always 100% accurate because they are computer generated.
4. The home page’s web page links are always good because they are computer generated.
5. Unlike most Internet home pages, it’s not cluttered or confusing.
6. A common background is used for all of the web pages. This results in quicker loading because the Web browser only needs to download the background image once.
7. Large font sizes and lots of empty space result in web pages which are very easy to read.
[Comment: We are used to thinking in terms of laying out printed documents where space is at a premium. It is best to forget this idea when working with the Internet. On the World Wide Web, larger, easier to read fonts, with lots of empty space, do not result in increased storage space requirements or increased upload times.]
8. All of the pages, including the home page, automatically adjust to the width of the Web browser window.
[Comment: Why use narrow, fixed-width columns, like printed newspapers have, when Web browsers are all capable of adjusting the text to different window widths? If the reader wants a narrower column for easier reading, then all that he or she has to do is to make the Web browser window narrower!]
9. Text which is centered, with margins, rather than left justified text with no margins results in a symmetrical appearance which is very pleasing to the eye, as well as very easy to read.
[Comment: Why use left justified text, like it was typed on a typewriter, when Web browsers are all capable of automatically centering it?]
10. Unlike many web pages, font size can be user adjusted by using “View/Text Size.”
11. Special characters such as ’, “, and ” give the text a more pleasing, professional look.
