My philosophy is, “If it’s not available for free on the Internet, then it’s probably not worth bothering with.” I’ve been following this credo for several years now, but until recently, I hadn’t really thought too much about why I felt that way.
If someone is in “the preaching mood,” that mood which Śrīla Prabhupāda wants us to be in, then he is going to want to get “the word” out to as many people as possible, without concern for making a profit. Making whatever we have created (a book, a play, a painting, a photograph, a lecture, a song, etc.) available for free on the Internet is a very good way to accomplish this goal.
Besides, preachers and teachers are supposed to be brahmins (the priestly class, highest of the four varṇas or Vedic classes of society). A true brahmin does not charge a fee for his services. As soon as a brahmin tries to turn his craft into a money-making-scheme then he is no longer a brahmin. Instead, he becomes a vaiśya (the mercantile class) or a śūdra (the laborer class).
If a person does not want to make his preaching work available for free on the Internet, then he is probably either a vaiśya, a śūdra, a kṛpaṇa (miser), or some combination of the three. In other words, “He is not a brahmin.” Our time is very precious, so why should we waste it on the preaching of people who are not brahmins?
