Editorial: Are the ISKCON “Gurus” Good Devotees?

The truly advanced devotee sees that he is not a devotee but that everyone else is a devotee.—Srila Prabhupada

Thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street, one should be more tolerant than a tree—Lord Caitanya

Anyone who has any desire or aspiration for satisfying his senses by becoming more and more important, either in the material sense or in the spiritual sense, cannot actually relish the really sweet taste of devotional service—Srila Prabhupada

Dear Prabhus, please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

For a time, some of the original 11 “gurus” seemed to actually believe that they had been appointed by Srila Prabhupada, and some of them actually seemed to have some genuine spiritual potency. Of course, some of the original 11 knew that they had never been appointed, and are therefore the greatest of criminals. All of these 11 should now realize that they were never appointed, unless they are complete fools!

Since, “The truly advanced devotee sees that he is not a devotee but that everyone else is a devotee.” how can any of the so-called gurus who came after them, who obviously stepped forward to say, “I want to be a guru.” be considered to be very good devotees? Isn’t the current havoc in ISKCON graphic testimony that they are not!!!

Some of them seem to be up to the same old tricks: “Get my Godbrothers out of the positions of power, and install my own disciples instead.” What they don’t seem to realize is that by doing this, and by encouraging their own disciples to be disrespectful to their “goduncles,” they and their disciples are committing very great vaisnava aparada, because the really sincere, advanced disciples of Srila Prabhupada have no desire to “become guru,” but simply want to render some humble service to Srila Prabhupada, and somehow or other, stay in the association of devotees. For such a “guru” to be on the GBC where they are required to resolve conflicts between Godbrothers and “grand disciples,” this is obviously a conflict of interest.

In light of the above, my question is “How can someone who wants to be a guru, be considered a devotee???” It seems like a contradiction. Perhaps they might fool themselves and others into thinking that they are “making this great sacrifice,” in order for the preaching to go on, or that Srila Prabhupada would be pleased by this, but it is becoming more and more obvious that Srila Prabhupada and Lord Sri Krsna are not pleased by these activities, because the vaisnavas are not pleased.

Things were going on very nicely between November 14th, 1977 (The day Srila Prabhupada’s physical presence ceased to be manifest.) and the GBC meetings in March of 1978. I noticed that all of my godbrothers and godsisters were actually taking shelter of each other, and cooperating with each other like never before. Why can’t we go back to this blissful situation, only this time with leaders that actually follow Srila Prabhupada’s final order to have ritvik initiations “henceforward” (Srila Prabhupada’s letter of July 9, 1977 “To All G.B.C. and Temple Presidents” - http://pratyatosa.com/?P=25), and to not make any changes to “the system of management” (Srila Prabhupada’s “Declaration of Will” - http://pratyatosa.com/?P=3v), and to have each and every future property trustee be “my (Srila Prabhupada’s) initiated disciple.” (Srila Prabhupada’s “Declaration of Will”).

Aspiring to somehow or other serve the vaisnavas, and to stay in their association,

Your servant,
Pratyatosa Dasa
